How to Choose the Right Private Security Company

1. Confirm the license

In California, every private patrol company must hold a Private Patrol Operator (PPO) license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). 2. Check insurance and bonding

A properly run security company carries liability insurance and is bonded. Ask for a certificate of insurance, and confirm the company can name your property as additional insured when required. This is what protects you if something ever goes wrong.

3. Ask about dispatch

When an incident happens at 2 a.m., who answers? There is a real difference between a live, in-house dispatcher and a voicemail box or an overseas call center. Live 24/7 dispatch means faster response and genuine coordination when it counts.

4. Look at reporting and accountability

You should be able to see what officers actually did. Time-stamped, photo-documented patrol logs and body-worn cameras turn “we drove by” into provable, reviewable records. If a company cannot show you its reporting, keep looking.

5. Evaluate officer training

Every officer should hold an active BSIS Guard Card, with armed officers additionally holding an Exposed Firearms Permit. Beyond the paperwork, ask about training in de-escalation, defensive tactics, and emergency response — the skills that determine how situations are actually handled.
